Trump and Biden Worked Together to Bungle Afghanistan
Joe Biden deserves plenty of blame for the moral atrocities happening in Afghanistan right now. His obstinate instance on pulling out of the country precipitously, against the advice of senior military advisors, is the proximate cause for today’s chaos. The disaster that followed wasn’t just predictable, it was repeatedly predicted. But anyone who tells you that Biden deserves all of the blame is trying to sell you something (probably a washed-up, has-been residing in South Florida). If Biden’s fecklessness was a necessary cause, it wasn’t a sufficient one.
No. It was that orange asshole from Mar-a-Lago who started the capitulation to the Taliban that made eventual collapse inevitable. Trump cut the elected Afghan government out of negotiations and chose instead to work directly with the Taliban in his rush to flee. Then he continued to draw down our troop presence in spite of the Taliban repeated violating the agreement they signed with our feckless negotiators. Now he would have you believe that if only he were President things would be different. His supporters insist that the problem isn’t the withdrawal but “the execution.”
They’re either fools or conmen; perhaps both.
Abandoning Afghanistan made these atrocities inevitable. There is no spinning this to the advantage of one side or the other. No, this is a bipartisan disaster the likes of which we haven’t seen in a generation and may never see again.
The isolationists in both parties worked together to get what they wanted and it turned out that what they wanted was desperate Afghanis clinging to the hulls of C-17s as they take off, falling thousands of feet to their death in the Afghan desert. Congrats guys.
Let me be abundantly clear about this, the isolationists in both parties bear the responsibility for what comes next. The blood of those who have died trying to escape and those who the Taliban will execute in the coming months is on their hands. They are responsible for the women shoved back into burkas and servitude. For the acid attacks. For the stonings. For pissing away twenty years of hard-won gains for humanity.
Today, my rage radiates in all directions.
